Manchester City have dismissed coach Gareth Taylor just days before their Women's League Cup final against Chelsea. Nick Cushing steps in as interim coach. City, who narrowly missed the Women's Super League title last season, are currently fourth with six matches left. They trail leaders Chelsea by 12 points, with Manchester United and Arsenal also ahead, each having a game in hand.
Taylor's last match was a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Aston Villa. Despite this victory, City decided to change leadership. Managing director Charlotte O'Neill stated that the club aims to compete at the top of the WSL and maintain its record of European qualification. She noted that this season's results haven't met their high standards.

O'Neill expressed hope that new management would invigorate their campaign for the 2025-26 Women's Champions League qualification. She thanked Taylor for his contributions, highlighting FA Cup and League Cup victories as memorable achievements for the club. "We wish him all the best for the future," she added.
Taylor's tenure included winning the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup two years later. He also led City to second place finishes in the WSL during the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons.
Nick Cushing returns to lead City after previously coaching from 2013 to 2020. During his earlier tenure, he secured City's only WSL title in 2016, along with an FA Cup win in 2017 and two League Cups in 2014 and 2016. Cushing now aims for another League Cup victory against Chelsea at Pride Park on Saturday.
This upcoming match is significant as it marks one of four encounters against Chelsea this month. The teams will face off once more in the WSL and twice in the Champions League quarter-finals.
