Nico Gonzalez has officially joined Manchester City as their fourth acquisition in the January transfer window. The 23-year-old midfielder completed a £50 million move from Porto, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. Gonzalez follows Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis to the Etihad Stadium. This signing aims to strengthen City's squad after losing Rodri for the remainder of the season.
Gonzalez began his career at Barcelona's academy, making 37 appearances for their first team before transferring to Porto for the 2023-24 season. At Porto, he played 68 matches across all competitions, showcasing his skills as a defensive midfielder. His performances have been pivotal for Porto, who currently sit third in the Primeira Liga, trailing leaders Sporting CP by eight points.

In this season's Primeira Liga, Gonzalez has excelled defensively. He leads Porto with 19 tackles won and ranks third in passes completed with 819, following Nehuen Perez and Otavio. Despite being left out of Porto's squad for their recent 2-2 draw with Rio Ave, he completed his medical in Portugal before finalising his move to Manchester City.
"This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career," Gonzalez expressed. "I am 23, and I want to test myself in England. There's no better club than Manchester City for me to do that." He praised City's squad as "unbelievable," filled with world-class talent. Gonzalez is eager to work under Pep Guardiola and looks forward to meeting his new teammates and staff.
Gonzalez's debut might occur during this weekend's FA Cup fourth-round match against Leyton Orient. His addition is expected to provide depth and skill to City's midfield as they aim to recover their form this season.
