Manchester City have secured the services of young defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for a reported fee of 29.6 million. Reis has committed to a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League champions, marking their second acquisition in January after Abdukodir Khusanov joined earlier in the week.
The Brazilian centre-back has played 22 matches for Palmeiras, scoring twice, and has also been capped nine times for Brazil's Under-17 team. Although Palmeiras wanted to retain Reis on loan until the season's end, Manchester City insisted on an immediate transfer due to their current defensive injury issues.

City's defence has been plagued by injuries this season. Key midfielder Rodri is out for the season, while John Stones and Ruben Dias have faced inconsistent spells due to injuries. Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji have also suffered setbacks, which threatened City's campaign as they experienced a rare slump with only one win in 13 games.
Despite these challenges, Pep Guardiola's team has bounced back, winning four of their last five matches across all competitions. Their latest victory was a commanding 6-0 win against Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
Reis follows in the footsteps of other promising talents leaving Palmeiras for significant fees, such as Endrick's move to Real Madrid and Willian Estevao's transfer to Chelsea. "This is a dream come true," said Reis. "Since I was a young kid I've always dreamed of an opportunity just like this one and to play for a club as big as City."
Reis expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City, highlighting the club's stature and history. "When the door knocked, and it was Manchester City, I knew there wasn't anywhere else to go," he added. He is eager to work under Pep Guardiola, believing that it will aid his development into an exceptional player.
The young defender is optimistic about integrating into City's squad alongside fellow Brazilians like Ederson and Savinho. The club's experience with Brazilian players is seen as beneficial for his adaptation process. Meanwhile, Manchester City are also looking to finalise a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush before the transfer window closes later this month.
