Manchester City Maintains Stronger Squad Than Liverpool Despite Injury Challenges

Despite facing multiple injuries, Danny Mills believes Manchester City has a stronger squad than Liverpool. He highlights the need for better injury management while acknowledging City's past successes in overcoming player absences.

Manchester City, despite recent setbacks, still boasts a stronger squad than their Premier League rivals Liverpool, according to Danny Mills. The reigning champions have experienced a rare four-game losing streak under Pep Guardiola, trailing Liverpool by five points. Key players like Rodri, Ruben Dias, and Phil Foden are among those sidelined due to injuries.

Mills believes City has the best selection of players in the league but questions if more could be done to prevent injuries. "I think you can look at the injuries and say City still have the strongest squad in the world, without a shadow of a doubt," Mills told Stats Perform. He suggests examining training routines and player rotation as potential factors contributing to these injuries.

City's Squad Strength Outweighs Liverpool's Injuries

Despite missing key figures like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne in the past, City managed to adapt. However, coping without Rodri has been challenging. With Rodri in the team since last season's start, City won 28 out of 36 games without losing any. Without him, they've lost five out of 13 matches.

The drop in win percentage from 77.8% with Rodri to 53.8% without highlights his importance. Yet, Mills remains optimistic about City's ability to adapt as they have before. "Every team has injuries," he said. "Manchester City have done this before." He recalls how they won titles without key players like Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

City's recent four-game losing streak is unusual for them; it last happened in August 2006 under Stuart Pearce. Their latest defeat was a 2-1 loss at Brighton after leading at halftime—a first since May 2021 against the same opponent.

Liverpool's Advantage and City's Potential Comeback

Liverpool capitalised on City's struggles by collecting 28 points from their first 33 available—only bettered by their 2019-20 start with 31 points. Despite this, Mills believes City can still catch up with Liverpool when they meet at Anfield on December 1st.

"I don't think the title race is over by any stretch of the imagination," Mills stated confidently. He acknowledges Liverpool's current lead but emphasises City's experience in overcoming such challenges under Guardiola's leadership.

Guardiola's Uncertain Future

Mills also pointed out that uncertainty surrounding Guardiola's future might be affecting City's performance. "Pep's future is uncertain, and I don't think that helps," Mills explained. He compared it to Alex Ferguson's retirement announcement at Manchester United and its impact on their performance.

He noted similar effects when Jurgen Klopp faced uncertainty last season with Liverpool leading by five points but eventually finishing nine points behind City despite having a game in hand earlier on.

Mills concluded that while managerial uncertainty can affect teams negatively, it's not insurmountable for clubs like Manchester City who have proven resilient over time through various challenges.
