Manchester United Secures Europa League Final Spot With 4-1 Victory Over Athletic Bilbao

Mason Mount scored twice as Manchester United overcame Athletic Bilbao 4-1, winning 7-1 on aggregate to advance to the Europa League final. The match showcased United's resilience and attacking prowess.

Mason Mount's two goals, along with strikes from Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund, propelled Manchester United to a 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao. This win secured their spot in the Europa League final. Despite trailing at halftime due to Mikel Jauregizar's impressive long-range goal, United turned the game around at Old Trafford. The Red Devils had previously won 3-0 in the first leg at San Mames.

Mount's introduction as a substitute brought calm to United's performance. He scored with just under 20 minutes left, leveling the score. Casemiro then put United ahead before Hojlund added another goal. Mount sealed the win with his second goal, completing a 7-1 aggregate triumph. Ruben Amorim's team will now face Tottenham in the final on May 21 at San Mames.

United Defeats Bilbao to Reach Final

In the early stages, Alex Berenguer missed two opportunities for Athletic Bilbao. Alvaro Djalo also had a chance blocked after Harry Maguire's misplaced pass. However, Jauregizar capitalised on a loose ball and scored from 25 yards out in the 31st minute. Before halftime, Alejandro Garnacho missed a chance set up by Patrick Dorgu.

In the second half, Unai Nunez narrowly missed with a header as United struggled initially. But Mount reignited the home crowd with a precise finish into the bottom-right corner, making Athletic's task daunting. Casemiro then extended United's lead by heading in Bruno Fernandes' free-kick.

Late in the match, Amad Diallo provided an assist for Hojlund to score from close range. Mount then lobbed in another goal during injury time as Julen Agirrezabala was caught off his line. This ensured a comprehensive victory for Manchester United.

This match marked Mount’s return from injury and his goal was United’s first shot on target of the game. It was their first instance without a shot on target in Europe since March 2023 against Real Betis. Notably, substitutes have contributed seven goals for United this season in the Europa League, only surpassed by AZ’s eight goals.

Athletic Bilbao's Challenges

Athletic Bilbao showed resilience despite missing key players like Oihan Sancet and brothers Inaki and Nico Williams. These absences were significant as they accounted for over half of Athletic’s Europa League goals this season (12 out of 21). Jauregizar’s goal was his first in this competition after 11 appearances.

The victory highlighted Manchester United’s depth and tactical flexibility as they prepare for their upcoming challenge against Tottenham in the final.
