Harry Maguire's decisive header secured Manchester United's thrilling 5-4 victory over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second leg. United seemed comfortable with a 2-0 lead until Lyon's resurgence forced extra time, leaving United trailing 4-2 by the 109th minute. Bruno Fernandes' penalty reignited hope, followed by Kobbie Mainoo's late equaliser and Maguire's winning goal, completing a stunning comeback.
Lyon had reduced their deficit through Corentin Tolisso's header and Nicolas Tagliafico's shot, which narrowly crossed the line despite Andre Onana's efforts. Even after Tolisso was sent off, Lyon pressed on in extra time. Rayan Cherki put them ahead with a left-footed strike, and Alexandre Lacazette extended their lead from the penalty spot.

United's first-half dominance was evident as they took an early lead. Alejandro Garnacho set up Manuel Ugarte for a simple finish. Andre Onana denied Rayan Cherki an equaliser, while Fernandes struck the crossbar with a volley. Diogo Dalot doubled United's advantage just before halftime with a low finish past Lyon’s defence.
Despite being down to ten men, Lyon continued to challenge United. However, when Thiago Almada fouled Casemiro, Fernandes calmly converted the penalty to keep United in contention. Mainoo then curled in a crucial goal to level the aggregate score before Maguire headed home the winner from Casemiro’s cross.
This match marked only the second instance of United winning 5-4 in their history, echoing their 1958 victory over Arsenal. It was also notable for being the first major European game with five goals scored after extra time began. Maguire’s goal was historic as it was the first 120th-minute winner in Europa League history.
The victory ensures Ruben Amorim remains on course for silverware in his debut season as manager. United now face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, who are considered favourites for the tournament. The dramatic win at Old Trafford will be remembered as one of United’s most remarkable European nights.
