Manchester United aims to reclaim its place in European competitions after a disappointing 2024-25 season, according to Mason Mount. The team ended the Premier League season in 15th position, marking their lowest finish since the 1989-90 season. Additionally, they recorded their fewest points in a top-flight season since their relegation in 1973-74 and suffered 18 league defeats, the most since that same period.
The club's failure to secure a spot in the Champions League for the 2025-26 season was confirmed after a narrow 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final. This marks Manchester United's first absence from European football since the 2014-15 season. Mount expressed his commitment to helping the team return to Europe next year, stating, "Europe is a massive, massive thing for us." He emphasised that playing in the Champions League would be ideal but reiterated that any European competition is important.

To strengthen their squad, Manchester United has already invested over £125 million on new signings. Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbuemo from Brentford have joined the team, with more arrivals anticipated. Despite these additions, players like Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are expected to depart as part of squad adjustments.
Mason Mount has been identified as a key player for manager Ruben Amorim as he seeks consistent performances from his squad. After joining from Chelsea for a reported £55 million in July 2023, Mount has faced challenges with injuries and form. Consequently, he has fallen out of favour with England's national team setup. In his time at United, he has scored only four goals across all competitions in 47 appearances.
The Red Devils are currently on a pre-season tour in the United States. They will face West Ham United, Bournemouth, and Everton as part of the Premier League Summer Series. Their competitive season kicks off with a home match against Arsenal at Old Trafford on 17 August.
Despite links with players like Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, no formal offers have been made yet. The focus remains on balancing incoming talent with necessary departures to optimise team performance for the upcoming season.
