Manchester United strengthened their push for a top-four finish with a 3-1 home victory over Aston Villa, secured by Benjamin Sesko’s late strike. Matheus Cunha and Casemiro scored earlier, while Ross Barkley replied for Villa. The result means United move three points clear of Villa in the Premier League standings.
Before kick-off at Old Trafford, the sides were locked on points, separated only by goal difference. That narrow gap increased thanks to Michael Carrick’s team, who have now earned 22 points from nine Premier League matches, with a record of W7 D1 L1, the best return by any club since Carrick took charge on January 17.

Bruno Fernandes did not score, yet shaped the match with another influential display for Manchester United. The midfielder produced two assists, taking his Premier League total this season to 16. That figure moves Fernandes past David Beckham’s 15 assists from the 1999-00 campaign, setting a new single-season record for a United player in the competition.
Those two passes also carried wider meaning for Fernandes and the club. They lifted his overall assist tally for United in all competitions to 100. Fernandes is now the fourth player to reach that mark for the club in the Premier League era, alongside Ryan Giggs with 249, Wayne Rooney with 127 and Beckham with 115.
The game itself unfolded with United asserting control early, especially in the first half. Amad Diallo met a cross with a firm header that Emiliano Martinez pushed away. Soon after, Diogo Dalot arrived unmarked at the back post but fired over the bar, wasting a clear chance to open the scoring.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 53rd minute and came from a set-piece. Fernandes swung in a corner from the right, and Casemiro slipped free in the area. The midfielder glanced the ball towards the far post, where it clipped the upright and crossed the line, giving United a deserved lead.
Villa answered 11 minutes later through Barkley, who was making his 200th Premier League start. Barkley collected possession on the edge of the box and curled a precise shot into the bottom-right corner. Amadou Onana stood in an offside position but moved away in time, ensuring the equaliser stood.
The visitors could not build on that response, and United retook control on the counter. In the 71st minute, Fernandes slid a measured throughball into space for Cunha. The forward stayed calm and guided a low finish past Martinez. Late on, substitute Sesko reacted first to Lamare Bogarde’s attempted clearance in the box, spun sharply, and drove a shot that deflected heavily off Tyrone Mings before beating Martinez.
Beyond the scoreline, the numbers underline the direction of both clubs in the Premier League. United’s strong run under Carrick continues, while Villa have now suffered three straight top-flight defeats for the first time since February 2023. The result tightens United’s grip on a Champions League chase as Villa search for a response.
