Manchester United Edge Liverpool 3-2 As Mainoo Seals Top-five Finish

Kobbie Mainoo struck a late winner as Manchester United edged Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford, confirming Champions League qualification for next season. The midfielder guided a precise shot into the bottom-left corner on 77 minutes, sparking loud celebrations and securing a place among Europe’s elite after a tense Premier League contest.

The top-five target was clear before kick-off, after Bournemouth’s 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace increased the pressure. Manchester United needed only a draw to secure Champions League qualification but aimed for more. Liverpool were also chasing a top-five finish, entering this match with Arne Slot’s side still short of the points required.

Man Utd beat Liverpool 3-2 to seal top five

Manchester United made an explosive start and led 2-0 inside 14 minutes, their quickest such advantage against Liverpool in Premier League history. Matheus Cunha’s effort deflected in off Alexis Mac Allister for the opener. Soon after, Bruno Fernandes’ header across goal was diverted in when the ball rebounded off Benjamin Sesko, after Freddie Woodman’s initial touch.

There were chances to extend that lead before the break, with Fernandes missing a clear opening for 3-0. The momentum then shifted dramatically early in the second half. Within 11 minutes of the restart, Manchester United lost control as Liverpool punished errors, seized space in midfield, and dragged themselves level with two quick strikes.

Dominik Szoboszlai began Liverpool’s response by stealing an under-hit pass from Amad Diallo. Szoboszlai carried the ball from deep and finished across Senne Lammens to cut the deficit. Lammens was then at fault for the equaliser, misplacing a pass that Mac Allister collected before feeding Szoboszlai, who set up Cody Gakpo for a first-time finish.

Manchester United almost fell behind when Luke Shaw diverted the ball towards his own net, but Lammens reacted well to prevent the own goal. That stop proved crucial. When Mac Allister failed to clear properly later, the ball dropped to Mainoo on the edge of the box, and the 19-year-old finished first time, days after agreeing a new five-year contract.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Premier League data debrief and records

Michael Carrick’s home record in charge of Manchester United strengthened further with this result. Carrick has now won eight of nine Premier League home games as Manchester United manager, across both his current tenure and his interim spell in 2021. He becomes the sixth manager, and the first from England, to claim eight wins in the first nine home matches.

Antonio Conte with Chelsea in 2016-17 was the last manager to post similar home figures, also taking eight wins from nine. For Liverpool, this was the earliest they had been two goals behind in a Premier League match since February 2023 against Wolves, when they trailed 2-0 after 12 minutes. Slot’s team still fought back strongly, reaching 2-2.

Manchester United’s long-standing strength when leading at half-time in home league fixtures was tested again. That unbeaten run now stretches to 399 such matches. Mainoo’s decisive strike also carried personal meaning, counting as a first Premier League goal in 718 days, since scoring against Newcastle United in May 2024, and completed Manchester United’s first league double over Liverpool since 2015-16.

Liverpool still remain close to their own target, needing a maximum of four more points to make sure of a top-five Premier League finish and join Manchester United in the Champions League places. Their remaining fixtures come against Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford, leaving little margin for error during the closing weeks of the campaign.
