Manchester United to bid for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic

Bengaluru, December 19: Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £27million bid for Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic as Jose Mourinho wants to reinforce his midfield in January.

The Mirror claim Jose Mourinho is targeting the 23-year-old Croatian as he looks to boost his options in midfield.

The former Inter Milan star is not a regular under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid and Mourinho believes that a player of his caliber can be lured away from Santiago Bernabeu as he deserves first-team football.

Club-record signing Paul Pogba has been missing through injury and suspension at various times this season, forcing the Red Devils to change their style of play dramatically as they do not possess much creativity without the French superstar and Kovacic can solve that issue very easily.

Kovacic is a creative central midfielder, much similar to Pogba. He is composed on the ball, can dribble well and find defence-splitting passes.

He has struggled to hold down a spot under Zinedine Zidane following a £25m move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2015.

The Croat could be open to join United as Mourinho prepares to receive offers for outcast Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Marouane Fellaini could also be on his way out after rejecting a new contract offer.

Meanwhile, reports continue to link United with an approach for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil who will be out of contract in the summer.

Mourinho and Ozil worked together at Real Madrid and the duo shares mutual respect for each other and it is believed that both of them want to work together once again.

Mourinho confirmed there could indeed be exits next month, saying: “I think for the right price. That’s my approach as a manager, in cases where the club advises me. I think every player has a price.

“If a player is not happy, if a player brings with him the request with the number that we consider a good number for us – like it happened for us last season with Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin – I would never say no.”
