Bruno Fernandes Equalled Premier League Assist Record As Manchester United Beat Nottingham Forest 3-2
Bruno Fernandes reached 20 Premier League assists for the season as Manchester United edged Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford, matching the competition’s single-season record and capping a dramatic game that also featured a disputed goal and a significant scoring landmark.
The Portugal midfielder now sits alongside Thierry Henry’s 2002-03 campaign and Kevin De Bruyne’s 2019-20 season on 20 assists. Fernandes will chase the outright Premier League mark, and a share of the best total across Europe’s top five leagues, when United visit Brighton next week.

If Fernandes adds one more assist at Brighton, the United captain will move to 21 for the league season. That figure would surpass the existing Premier League record and match Thomas Muller and Lionel Messi, who share the highest single-season total of 21, according to Opta’s records.
Fernandes was influential throughout against Forest, attempting five shots and creating eight chances. Those eight key passes equalled Fernandes’ best return in a league fixture this season. United produced 29 efforts on goal overall and finished with an expected goals figure of 4.19, reflecting sustained pressure.
The scoring started early when Luke Shaw struck after five minutes, giving United a fast start with the club’s earliest Premier League goal at Old Trafford since January 2024. Bryan Mbeumo almost extended the lead before half-time, rounding Matz Sels on the counter before hitting the post.
Forest responded after the interval. Elliot Anderson delivered a dangerous cross on 53 minutes and Morato met it with a firm header to level. United soon reclaimed the advantage in controversial style, with Matheus Cunha finishing from close range following a scramble inside the Forest penalty area.
Replays showed the ball struck Mbeumo’s arm during the build-up to Cunha’s strike. VAR asked referee Michael Salisbury to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. Salisbury declined to overturn the decision and allowed the goal, judging the handball to be accidental under the current interpretation.
Fernandes’ landmark assist arrived in the 76th minute. The midfielder drilled a low cross into the box and Mbeumo converted to make it 3-1, giving Fernandes his 20th assist of the league campaign and placing the United playmaker alongside Henry and De Bruyne in the record books.
Forest were not finished. Morgan Gibbs-White guided a superb first-time shot into the net to cut the deficit to 3-2, and that effort became the 1,000th Premier League goal of this season. Since the start of March, no Premier League player has more goal involvements than Gibbs-White, who now has 10.

United created several chances to secure the result late on. Fernandes supplied further openings, but Patrick Dorgu was denied by Sels, Diogo Dalot struck the post, and Joshua Zirkzee had one effort blocked before forcing another strong save from the Forest goalkeeper on the rebound.
Fernandes leaves Old Trafford level with two leading names in Premier League history and now has another chance to set new standards. United’s attacking numbers, alongside Gibbs-White’s surge in form for Forest, underline the offensive focus that continues to shape this Premier League season.
