Manchester United Centre-Back Options Not A Current Concern, Carrick Says Ahead Of Brentford
Michael Carrick says Manchester United’s centre-back options are not a problem right now, even as the club chases Champions League qualification for 2026-27 and faces uncertainty over the long-term shape of the squad and coaching staff.
United meet Brentford on Monday, knowing three points would open an 11-point gap to sixth-placed Brighton. That advantage would almost guarantee a Champions League place for 2026-27, despite injuries and suspensions that have forced reshuffles in central defence this season.

Carrick is still working as interim manager and has not been told if the role will continue beyond this season. Yet Carrick insists his main concern is performance on the pitch rather than planning future defensive recruitment, even with several first-choice centre-backs spending long spells in the treatment room.
Speaking about the situation in central defence, Carrick said: "It's not an area of concern for me at this moment in time," Carrick said. "At the moment, talking about the summer and what goes beyond that, it's difficult to elaborate on that. Licha [Martinez] is actually missing games for a different reason at the minute, which we won't go into, but I understand why you are asking it. But, no, I haven't got concerns. I think we've got a mixed blend there of experience, of real quality and some young talented players. We have two promising young players (Heaven and Yoro) that have already shown what they can do. I thought Ayden was fantastic last week, in such a difficult game. I haven't got concerns as I sit here. Obviously, what the future looks like, I can't really get involved because I'm not sure myself."
Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have both had disrupted seasons. Martinez has only started 11 Premier League matches, partly because of injuries and also due to a three-match suspension after a red card against Everton, while De Ligt has made just 13 league starts so far.
{TABLE_1}Leny Yoro has 19 league starts but has also missed recent games through injury. That absence forced United to pair natural full-back Noussair Mazraoui with young defender Ayden Heaven in central defence during the 1-0 victory over Chelsea last week, a clean sheet that helped stabilise United’s push for the top four.
Carrick highlighted that display when assessing Manchester United’s centre-back depth. The interim boss praised Heaven’s contribution at Stamford Bridge and pointed to Yoro and Heaven as evidence that United can already call on emerging talent alongside senior figures like Harry Maguire, who recently agreed a new contract with the club.
There remains uncertainty about how the backline will look beyond this season. Martinez is currently unavailable for a separate reason that Carrick declined to discuss, while De Ligt has not featured since facing Crystal Palace on November 30, during the closing weeks of Ruben Amorim's time in charge.
De Ligt has been out for five months with a lower back problem and is still in recovery. Carrick offered a cautious fitness update on the Netherlands international, who is working to return before the end of the current campaign.
On the Dutch defender’s rehabilitation, Carrick said: "He's working towards being fit again. He's been a little bit on the grass and there is progress, but there is not much else I can say. It's one of those injuries and he's rehabbing, he's working to get fit, so we're hoping to have him back as soon as possible."
As United approach the final weeks of the campaign, Carrick is trying to balance short-term results with longer-term questions he cannot yet answer. The combination of experienced centre-backs, promising youngsters and players nearing returns from injury leaves options available, but the exact make-up of Manchester United’s centre-back group for next season remains unclear.
