Ruben Amorim Urges Manchester United To Consider New Head Coach If Culture Change Fails

Ruben Amorim emphasises the need for a culture change at Manchester United. He suggests that if he cannot achieve this by next season, the club should appoint a new head coach. The team faces challenges following their worst Premier League campaign.

Manchester United's current struggles have led Ruben Amorim to suggest that a new head coach should be appointed if he cannot bring about a cultural shift at Old Trafford by the next season. Despite reaching the Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21, United has experienced their worst Premier League season, currently sitting 16th after a 2-0 loss to West Ham United. This defeat marked their ninth home loss this season, equalling their historical record.

United's recent form has been concerning, with no wins in seven Premier League matches, matching their longest winless streak from 1992. The team has fallen behind 1-0 at Old Trafford 12 times this season, a record only surpassed by Leicester City with 15 instances. These statistics highlight the recurring issues faced by the club throughout the campaign.

Amorim Calls for Culture Change at United

Amorim acknowledges the need for significant changes within the club. He expressed his concerns during a post-match press conference, stating that everyone must reflect seriously on various aspects beyond just focusing on the upcoming final. "Everybody here has to think seriously about a lot of things," he said. "The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about."

Amorim is aware that his position is precarious if improvements are not seen next season. He emphasised the importance of being strong and brave in the summer to avoid repeating this season's mistakes. "We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave," he stated. "Because we will not have a next season like this."

The team's current trajectory could lead to their worst finish since being relegated from Division One in 1973-74 when they ended up in 21st place. Last season's eighth-place finish under Erik ten Hag was already their lowest since the Premier League's rebranding in 1992.

Reflecting on Past Performances

Historically, Manchester United has rarely finished outside the top six, doing so only twice before this challenging period. Seven of their nine home defeats this season occurred under Amorim's leadership, with two losses happening before Erik ten Hag's dismissal last October.

Amorim feels embarrassed by United's league position and understands the pressure associated with managing such a prestigious club. When asked about his feelings regarding their standing, he candidly replied: "How is a manager of Manchester United supposed to feel in that position? Embarrassed."

As Manchester United prepares for the Europa League final, Amorim remains focused on instilling his preferred style of play while recognising that significant changes are necessary for future success. The upcoming summer will be crucial for rebuilding and addressing underlying issues within the team and its culture.
