Manchester United defender Eric Bailly to miss UEFA Super Cup

UEFA suspends Manchester United defender Eric Bailly for three matches following his red card in the Europa league semi-finals last season.

London, July 26: Manchester United defender Eric Bailly is set to miss the Super Cup tie against Real Madrid along with the Red Devils' opening fixture of the Champions League after he received a three-match ban for his red card against Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-finals.

However, Europe's governing body has now prolonged the defender's ban and issued a further two man ban which will be served in the upcoming season.

A statement from UEFA declared the news: "The CEDB has decided to suspend the Manchester United FC player Eric Bailly for three (3) UEFA club competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible."

United have also received a further warning from UEFA after their semi-final second leg against Celta started late.

Bailly has proved himself as one of Manchester United's best central defender since his £30.4 million move from Villarreal last summer and received huge credit from manager Mourinho throughout the season for his solid defensive displays.

The manager will be now pretty frustrated to start his season in Champions league without one of his first choice players, however with the new signing Victor Lindelof's presence and bench strength with the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, United will not have to worry.

Manchester United will start their European campaign against Real Madrid on August 8 in the Super Cup, while the draw and schedule for the Champions League will be done next month.

Manchester United recently played a pre-season friendly against the Los Blancos in the International Champions Cup where they won the match 2-1 in the shootout after it ended in a 1-1 draw in normal time.
