Manchester United Faces Fulham In FA Cup: Penalty Shootout Decides Dramatic Match

In a gripping FA Cup fifth-round match, Fulham defeated Manchester United 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Bernd Leno's outstanding saves were pivotal in securing Fulham's place in the quarter-finals.

Manchester United's FA Cup journey ended in the fifth round after a tense penalty shoot-out against Fulham at Old Trafford. The match concluded 1-1 in regular time, with Fulham triumphing 4-3 on penalties. Calvin Bassey put Fulham ahead just before half-time, but Bruno Fernandes equalised for United in the second half. Despite chances, neither team could secure a win during extra time.

United began the match energetically, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee missing early opportunities. Fulham soon found their rhythm and nearly scored when Sasa Lukic headed Alex Iwobi’s cross wide. The breakthrough came in stoppage time of the first half when Rodrigo Muniz set up Bassey to score from a corner.

Fulham Triumphs Over Manchester United in FA Cup

Before this match, Manchester United had an impressive record against Fulham in the FA Cup, having won nine consecutive ties since their last defeat to them in 1908. Additionally, United had not lost a fifth-round tie since 2006. However, Fulham's victory marked a significant achievement as they advanced to the quarter-finals.

The equaliser for United arrived in the 71st minute when Fernandes expertly finished Diogo Dalot's cross into the bottom-right corner. As full-time approached, Andre Onana made a crucial save from Emile Smith Rowe, while Alejandro Garnacho and Chido Obi missed late chances to clinch victory for United.

In extra time, Obi saw another attempt saved by Bernd Leno, while Onana denied Ryan Sessegnon’s effort. The penalty shoot-out began with six successful kicks until Victor Lindelof’s weak shot was saved by Leno. Antonee Robinson then scored for Fulham, leaving Zirkzee needing to convert his penalty to keep United in contention.

Leno once again proved decisive by saving Zirkzee’s attempt, sealing Fulham's place in the next round and leaving Old Trafford stunned. "Unbelievable," tweeted Fulham Football Club after their dramatic victory.

Leno was instrumental throughout the match, making eight saves including crucial stops from Garnacho and Obi twice each during the closing stages. His performance was pivotal in securing Fulham's overdue victory over Manchester United.

This result marked another low point for Manchester United's season as they were eliminated from yet another competition. Meanwhile, Fulham celebrated a memorable night that saw them advance further than they have managed against United for over a century.
