Bengaluru, February 28: Manchester United defender has suggested that finishing as Premier League's second-best team must be the bare minimum his squad should look up to this season.

Leaders Manchester City have built a 13-point advantage over their neighbours. With 10 games to go, it looks quite obvious that City will clinch the title. However, a fight in the top four is still on the cards.

Only six points separate the second and fifth-placed teams and for the second spot, United only have a two-point lead over Liverpool.
United have never finished below third during the Sir Alex Ferguson era. However, since his retirement, they have not finished above fourth also in the last four years. They recently beat Chelsea 2-1 to reclaim the second spot on the EPL table.
And now, defender Smalling, who was part of Ferguson's team too, feels wrapping up a second-place finish is the “bare minimum” criteria to sustain rebuilding momentum in the team.
"I think obviously we've been second for quite a while and that needs to be our bare minimum," the United defender said of the Premier League.
"The fact we get to play Liverpool at home as well I think is a big advantage.
"If we can separate ourselves from Chelsea and Liverpool and work our way up then we can do that.
"But I think that's our (goal) first and foremost."

United will face Crystal Palace in the coming gameweek after which they will host Liverpool on March 10.
And wins in these two matches can take them a step closer to finishing as runners-up this season. But they also have meetings with arch-rivals Manchester City and Arsenal scheduled before the end of the campaign, which can also determine where they will finish on the table.
