Manchester United Displays Positive Progress Under Ruben Amorim Despite EFL Cup Exit Against Bournemouth

Ruben Amorim acknowledges Manchester United's improvements following their EFL Cup defeat. He emphasises the team's enhanced performance as they prepare to face Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim expressed satisfaction with Manchester United's recent progress, urging his team to move past their EFL Cup loss as they face Bournemouth on Sunday. United narrowly avoided a third straight Premier League defeat last weekend by defeating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium with two late goals. However, they were eliminated from the EFL Cup after a 4-3 loss to Tottenham, with Son Heung-min's late corner goal sealing their fate.

Despite the cup exit, Amorim acknowledged his team's efforts and improvements. "I think we are improving near the opponents' box. We had some games that we are near the box, but without a real threat," he stated. He noted advancements in speed, pressing, physicality, and game understanding. "We understand more [about] the position and the movement that we should do," he added.

United's Progress Noted Despite EFL Cup Loss

Bournemouth have maintained an unbeaten streak in their last four Premier League matches. They recently drew 1-1 with West Ham after securing three consecutive wins. Andoni Iraola felt his team could have achieved another victory given their 29 shots and an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.01 in that match. He remarked on the fatigue affecting his forwards' finishing abilities.

Key Players to Watch

Amad Diallo has been a standout for Manchester United, contributing either a goal or an assist in each of his last five Premier League starts. His decisive goal against Man City highlights his impact under Amorim, with seven goal involvements overall during this period.

Ryan Christie played a crucial role for Bournemouth against West Ham, being involved in 11 of their 29 shots. His performance marked only the third instance where a Cherries player had both five or more shots and created five or more chances in a Premier League game.

Match Prediction: Manchester United Win

Manchester United did not secure victories against Bournemouth in either of their Premier League encounters last season, including a 3-0 home defeat in December. However, they have never lost consecutive home games to Bournemouth. The Cherries have struggled at Old Trafford historically, losing five out of seven visits.

Bournemouth have won their last two away league matches and aim for a third consecutive road win since December 2023 when they also faced United. Only Manchester City have attempted more shots than Bournemouth this season, showcasing their attacking intent.

United's vulnerability from corners remains evident as they have conceded 42% of their goals from such situations this season. Four out of seven goals conceded under Amorim have come from corners.

Team Win Probability (%)
Manchester United 50.1%
Draw 23.6%
Bournemouth 26.3%

The upcoming match presents an opportunity for Manchester United to consolidate their improvements while Bournemouth seeks to extend their unbeaten run on the road.
