Manchester United Urged To Learn From Defeat Against Wolfsburg In Women's Champions League

Fridolina Rolfo has called on Manchester United to learn from their 5-2 defeat by Wolfsburg. This loss ended United's unbeaten run in the Women's Champions League. Rolfo scored first in the 14th minute, but Ella Peddemors and Lineth Beerensteyn each scored twice, leading Wolfsburg to victory.

United currently hold fourth place in the Champions League standings, trailing leaders Lyon by just one point. During the match, United managed eight shots compared to Wolfsburg's 13, with an expected goals (xG) value of 1.18 against Wolfsburg's 1.93. Despite these statistics, the team struggled to convert opportunities into goals.

Marc Skinner, United's manager, reflected on the match: "The manager and experience in me looks at the point that they've had six shots on target and scored five," he told MUTV. "That's part and parcel of the game, you have to understand it." He emphasised that while they faced a strong opponent, many goals were due to their own errors.

Rolfo acknowledged that fatigue might have influenced their performance but refused to use it as an excuse. She stated: "I think it can play a part, absolutely. I think it's a mix of different factors. I wouldn't say it's the main reason." She stressed the importance of learning from mistakes and striving for improvement.

Skinner also highlighted the need for growth within the team: "It's on us as a collective. We'll learn from it; it will help our young team grow." He praised their overall performance in the competition but noted that they must improve game control against direct teams like Wolfsburg.

The team's focus remains on securing more points in this challenging stage of the Champions League. Rolfo expressed determination: "Nine points in such a tough Champions League stage, we should be happy but we have to continue because we want more than this."
