London, August 2: Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has backed Manchester City to lift the Premier League title next season, indicating that they will be the team to beat.

Manchester City appointed Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola last season with a lot of hype, however, the Spaniard's first season was low key as the blue half of Manchester managed a trophyless season and a third place finish in the league.

The club have reinforced the squad this season having spent on more than £220 million with the signing of Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Danilo, Benjamin Mendy and goalkeeper Ederson to post a challenge this time around.

The 13 times Premier League winner suggested, with such a solid squad Guardiola's side are well poised to lift their first league title since 2014.

He told Sky Sports: "I think Manchester City are the team to beat."

"I looked at them towards the end of last season and the forward players they've got is scary, with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling."

Giggs also mentioned that the inclusion of new keeper Ederson could be a big influence in their season as Guardialo struggled to find a regular starter in goal with Claudio Bravo and Willy Caballero.

"What they needed to get right was their defence and it will be interesting to see how Ederson settles in, because you don't win the Premier League with an average goalkeeper."

City's backline has seen a noticeable change before the start of the new season after all of their full-backs departed the club earlier in the transfer window.

Giggs warned that the fitness of Vincent Kompany could be critical for City's title challenge as the Blues lack depth and experience in defense.

"They've obviously invested heavily on full-backs but the question is still whether Vincent Kompany can stay fit because his influence and experience are key for them."

Manchester City's pre-season campaign started badly with a 2-0 defeat against United, however, the squad bounced back from that and won the next two fixtures comprehensively with wins over Real Madrid and Tottenham.

The citizens will be opening their Premier League campaign on August 12 when they welcome newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad and Pep Guardiola's men this time will be hoping to live up to the expectations of their fans to win the first title under the new boss.
