Manchester United's wait for a major trophy ended with their Carabao Cup victory on Sunday (February 26). The Red Devils beat Newcastle United 2-0 to win the tournament, thus their first trophy in six years.
United, despite having a torrid start to the season, have found their form of late and new manager Erik ten Hag has been a massive boon for them thus far. The Dutch manager has transformed the team with some crucial signings and departures, which has propelled the team upward this season.
One of the signings was Casemiro, the Brazilian midfielder. He joined United from Real Madrid and has become a pivotal piece of their zigsaw. He played a massive part in the final, scoring the opening goal in the 33rd minute. And his teammate Marcus Rashford only had good things to say after the Carabao Cup win.
"He makes a huge difference for us. His leadership and experience in big games is essential," Rashford said after the game.
"Speaking to some of the other forward lads, we have all said that when he is on the pitch, we can all feel the sense of security behind us which is so important," he added.
The 31-year-old midfielder has played 32 games for the Red Devils across all competitions this season and netted 4 goals in those. His solid display at the heart of the United midfield has definitely been a major factor in their upheaval.
The Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag also echoed the same sentiment after the win, stating players like Casemiro are serial winners and should be the leaders on the pitch.
"We need lads like this on the pitch to point the team, to coach the team, and organise the team," the dutch manager said.
United's focus will now shift to the Europa League and the Premier League for the rest of the season. The Red Devils are set to play Real Betis in the round of 16 of the Europa League, while they are currently sitting 3rd in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
