Bengaluru, April 18: Paul Pogba's relationship with Jose Mourinho hit rock bottom after a fiery half-time bust-up in the Manchester derby and this has led to talks of his exit from Old Trafford.
While nobody in the Manchester United side had come out of the first half with any credit it was Pogba who was the focus of the manager’s ire as the Red Devils trailed 2-0 at the break.
His anger only increased as Pogba sat and muttered under his breath as the manager was taking him to task in front of the other players for his performance.
Pogba responded with two goals in the second-half as the Red Devils came back from to win 3-2. It prompted a delighted Mourinho to do a massive u-turn at full time in the dressing room.
He told Pogba in front of all the players that he would have been his man of the match even without the two goals. Pogba was left bemused by the whole affair that has put further strain on the relationship between player and manager.
It was back to normal for Pogba on Sunday as he was hauled off just short of the hour after another disappointing showing from the club record £89million buy as United went down 1-0 to bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion.
The French international has been either subbed or omitted from the starting line up in eight of the last 13 games. The first cracks began to appear when he was hauled off in a 2-0 defeat at Spurs after failing to follow Mourinho’s touchline instructions.
Mourinho gave him a dressing down in showdown talks at Carrington two months ago in which the player complained that the team did not like his tactics and he himself did not like where he was being played.
It prompted Mourinho to tell him to check what was written on the door as he left his manager’s office.
Mourinho was also unhappy with Pogba after the victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford when Pogba interrupted a TV interview the manager was doing, pulling him towards him after clasping his hand.
Before the derby Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola revealed that Pogba’s agent had approached him asking if he wanted to buy the player.
Meanwhile, reports also claim that Real Madrid, who lost out to United in the race for Pogba, still want him.
While Pogba and Mourinho are unhappy with one another the player himself certainly does not want to call time on his return to Old Trafford where he began his career.
He enjoys being back in Manchester and is determined to make a success of it while Mourinho wants to get the best out of the player.
Pogba was performing very well for Manchester United up until his red card against Arsenal back on December 2nd.
That was a major turning point for the player and the club.
He was suspended for the first derby of the season which had United won the gap at the top would only have been five points.
They lost and it stretched to 11 and there was no going back after that.
Manchester United hierarchy certainly do not want to see a player they worked so hard to buy from Juventus leaving again after just two seasons at the club.
