Ruben Amorim admitted that Manchester United is now part of a Premier League relegation struggle after losing to Newcastle United. The Red Devils faced their fourth defeat in five league matches, with Newcastle securing a 2-0 win at Old Trafford through first-half goals by Alexander Isak and Joelinton. Amorim, under pressure, has managed five losses in his initial eight league games, marking the worst start for a United manager in 103 years.
Manchester United's recent performance has been concerning, with six losses in December alone, their highest in a single month since September 1930 when they lost seven times. This string of defeats has placed them in a precarious position. "That is really clear [United are being dragged into a relegation battle], so we have to fight," Amorim told Sky Sports. He acknowledged the current period as one of the toughest in the club's history but remains firm on maintaining his approach.

During the match against Newcastle, Amorim made the decision to substitute Joshua Zirkzee after just 33 minutes, replacing him with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. He explained that this move was necessary for the team's benefit. "You have to think about the team and the player, but the player is suffering," he said. Amorim believed adding another midfielder would help control possession better.
The Red Devils have now experienced three consecutive home league defeats for the first time since February 1979. Additionally, they have lost three straight Premier League games within a single season for the first time since December 2015 under Louis van Gaal. As New Year's Eve approaches, United finds itself in 14th place in the Premier League standings, their lowest year-end position since 1989 when they finished that year in 15th place.
Amorim highlighted how difficult it was for his players to recover after conceding an early goal due to previous results and poor positioning during challenging moments. "It was very hard for us to turn it around after we conceded the first goal because of the results before," he noted. Despite these challenges, Amorim insists on sticking with his strategy unless there's a need for change from higher management.
Amorim expressed understanding towards Zirkzee's reaction upon substitution but emphasized its necessity for team dynamics. "I thought the team was suffering," he added. He reassured that Zirkzee is supported and valued within the squad despite this tough decision.
Newcastle outperformed Manchester United on this occasion; however, Amorim stressed that it wasn't an individual failure by Zirkzee but rather a collective challenge faced by the team. The focus remains on addressing these issues honestly and working towards improvement as they navigate through this difficult phase.
