Manchester United's wait for silverware finally ended after six long years as Erik ten Hag’s resurgent side crushed Premier League rival Newcastle United 2-0 with a comprehensive victory in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
The Red Devils last triumphed in this competition in 2017, defeating Southampton in a thrilling final 3-2. That season, Jose Mourinho's team also won the Europa League, but since then, no trophies landed at Old Trafford. However, just six months after being in control, the Dutch manager seems to be once again establishing the Manchester giants' superiority setting them on their way to the first success in six long years.
Here is how Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag marched on to the final in the competition:
After losing to Aston Villa away 3-1 on the weekend, United offered sweet revenge in midweek in the EFL Cup. It was United's last game ahead of the World Cup break and Erik Ten Hag co. delivered a picture-perfect second-half display to win it. Aston Villa got ahead in the tie twice thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins and an own goal from Diogo Dalot. But later goals from Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Scott McTominay dragged the tie to United's favor.
It was United's first game following the World Cup break and the team produced a comfortable victory returning to the field. The Championship hotshot could not deliver enough challenge at Old Trafford with goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford setting them on their way to the next round.
United were pitted against the minnow League One side in the next round however the London-based side stood firm at Old Trafford before Marcus Rashford put the tie to bed at the end. Antony gave the side the lead in just the 21st minute however Charlton showed resilience in getting back into the game throughout. However, Rashford scored twice in stoppage time putting the scoreline out of their reach.
Manchester United's first away match in the competition again went in favor of the visitor with a thumping victory. The away team dominated the game throughout after a six minutes goal from Marcus Rashford later followed by another from the January signing Wout Weghorst. United killed the tie at the very end after Bruno Fernandes scored the final goal in the 89th minute.
The Red Devils produced a similar display at the home in the return leg as well ending the fixture with a 5-0 aggregate victory. Two second-half goals from Anthony Martial and Fred booked an appearance at Wembley against Newcastle United which concluded with United earning the trophy eventually.
Manchester United opened the scoring just after 33 minutes when Casemiro headed home from Luke Shaw's free-kick. The Red Devils doubled their lead after Sven Botman deflected Marcus Rashford's shot out of the reach of Newcastle keeper Loris Karius which proved to be the final scoreline.
