Manchester, July 31: Manchester United are set to complete the signing of midfield powerhouse Nemanja Matic from Chelsea after the Serbian underwent a medical on Sunday (July 30).

Matic's signing would be a significant boost for Jose Mourinho's side after United failed in their efforts to sign Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur.

Serie A champions Juventus were also keen on Matic, but the player who will turn 29 on Tuesday (August 1) preferred a move to Old Trafford to be reunited with his old boss Mourinho, who brought him back to Chelsea in January 2014.

The transfer talks took a while as Chelsea and Manchester United were apart from each other in their valuation for the player, but now it is believed to be sorted out.

Chelsea were adamant on receiving £50 million for the Serb but it is an excessively high fee for a player who is turning 29. It is still unclear as to what the final price will be for the defensive midfielder.

Matic's Stamford Bridge exit had long been expected after the Chelsea manager Antonio Conte signed France international Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco in a £39.7 million deal earlier this month.

A picture flooded on Twitter purporting to show Matic in United training kit and wearing No.31, which has been vacant since the departure of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Chelsea had left Matic out of their tour to Asia to allow him to finalise a move. It is expected that the Blues will sign another midfielder this summer with just Kante, Fabregas and Bakayoko in their ranks and have been linked with a loan move for Bayern starlet Renato Sanches.

Matic would be United's third signing of the summer following a £31 million deal for the defender Victor Lindelof and £75 million move for Lukaku from Everton.

Mourinho's priority was to get a defensive midfielder this summer who can free up Paul Pogba and Andre Herrera to play further up front, and with an experienced midfield destroyer like Matic on board, the job is certainly done.
