Manchester United have announced the signing of young defender Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno. The initial transfer fee is £3.3 million, potentially increasing to £7 million. Although the agreement was reached in January, Leon could only join after turning 18 in April. The left-back has played nine times for Paraguay's under-20 team and made 33 appearances for Cerro Porteno.
Leon will be integrated into Manchester United's first team and Academy as he adjusts to his new environment. While primarily expected to play for the under-21 squad, he might also serve as a backup for first-team players Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu if Tyrell Malacia departs. This makes him a versatile addition to the club's defensive options.

Diego Leon is Manchester United's second acquisition this transfer window. Earlier, they secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million in June. The club is also negotiating with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo for a similar fee and has shown interest in Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.
The club expressed their commitment to supporting Leon during his transition to life in Manchester. "Leon will be supported by our first team and the Academy whilst he settles into life in Manchester," stated United. This support system aims to ensure a smooth adaptation process for the young Paraguayan talent.
This strategic move reflects Manchester United's focus on strengthening their squad with promising young talents. By investing in players like Leon, they aim to build a robust foundation for future success while maintaining competitiveness in current competitions.
