Manchester United's recent form has been troubling, highlighted by a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. This defeat marked their fourth consecutive loss across all competitions and their sixth in eight matches. It was the first time since 1979 that they lost three home games in a row. Gary Neville expressed his concerns about the team's current state.
The Red Devils have had a challenging December, losing six matches in all competitions. This is only the third time they've lost this many games in a month, with previous instances occurring in April 1926 and September 1930. They also conceded 18 goals in December, matching their record from March 1964.

"It is grim, it really is," Neville remarked about the situation. He added that he anticipated a loss against Newcastle due to their superior team and experienced manager. Neville noted that Manchester United's lineup lacked balance, particularly highlighting issues with the midfield and defence.
Neville criticised the pairing of Casemiro and Eriksen in midfield against Newcastle's Joelinton, Tonali, and Guimaraes. He believed this combination was ineffective and lacked energy. Ruben Amorim made changes after just 25 minutes, bringing on Mainoo to improve the situation.
Despite Mainoo's introduction, Neville felt that Casemiro and Eriksen needed quicker support alongside them. The lack of attacking threat from wing-backs was also highlighted as an issue for Manchester United.
United's struggles are set to continue as they prepare to face league leaders Liverpool on Sunday. They have not won any of their last eight league away games against Liverpool, drawing four and losing four. Additionally, they have scored just one goal in these encounters.
Neville joked about the upcoming match at Anfield by recalling excuses used by Sunday League teams for not showing up. However, he acknowledged the difficulty of this fixture for Manchester United over recent years.
Neville pointed out that players like Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford haven't shown commitment during training sessions but are still better options than some currently playing. He suggested that if Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold face Zirkzee or Bruno Fernandes instead of Garnacho or Rashford, it would be easier for Liverpool.
This situation poses a challenge for Ruben Amorim as he tries to establish new standards within the team while dealing with immediate needs amid desperation.
