Erik Ten Hag Critiques Controversial Penalty Decision Following Manchester United's Defeat To West Ham

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag voiced his discontent over a contentious penalty awarded against his team in a 2-1 loss to West Ham. Despite creating numerous chances, the Red Devils fell short, highlighting ongoing frustrations with officiating this season.

Manchester United's manager, Erik ten Hag, expressed his frustration after a late penalty led to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium. The Red Devils missed several opportunities in the first half, with Alejandro Garnacho hitting the crossbar and Diogo Dalot missing an open goal. These missed chances proved costly as Crysencio Summerville scored for West Ham in the 76th minute.

Casemiro managed to equalise for Manchester United, but a controversial penalty was awarded for a foul by Matthijs de Ligt on Danny Ings. Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty in the 92nd minute, securing victory for West Ham. Ten Hag commented on the decision, saying, "We have felt injustice three times this season." He emphasised that his team created many chances and should have been leading by two or three goals.

Ten Hag Critiques Penalty Decision After Loss

The referee, David Coote, awarded the penalty after reviewing the pitchside monitor despite protests from Manchester United players. They argued that Ings had handled the ball before De Ligt's challenge. Ten Hag remarked on the situation: "It was so difficult to see. Before the season, there was instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes."

Despite their efforts, Manchester United attempted 18 shots and generated an expected goals (xG) of 2.12 but failed to capitalise on their chances. In contrast, West Ham took 11 of their 12 shots in the second half and ended with an xG of 2.98, earning them three points. This result leaves Manchester United in 14th place with 11 points from nine matches.

Ten Hag acknowledged that his team needs to reflect on their performance: "We have to look in the mirror. We don’t score in a good game from our side." He also noted that this was not the first time they felt unfairly treated this season, impacting their position in the league table.

Upcoming Fixtures

West Ham's victory moved them up to 13th place on goal difference. Manchester United will face Chelsea at Old Trafford next in their Premier League campaign, while West Ham will travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The ongoing challenges for Manchester United highlight their struggle to convert opportunities into points this season. Despite creating numerous chances, they have been unable to secure victories consistently.
