Manchester United termed 'Bridesmaids' after another FA Cup defeat

Manchester United suffered a setback in the final match of the 2022-23 season. In a year which has bored fruits for the Red Devils, it was a sour end to the campaign as they fell to a defeat in the FA Cup Final at the hands of their rivals Manchester City.

Manchester United lost 2-1 at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday (June 3). Ilkay Gundogan scored a brace for the Cityzens whereas a controversial penalty from Bruno Fernandes proved to be only a consolation for the Red Devils.

United won the Carabao Cup earlier this season. And it would have been perfect had they won the FA Cup as well, which would have meant two trophies in the first season under Erik Ten Hag. But their dismal luck of late in the tournament continued as United suffered the defeat.

And after the match, United boss said his team fought back and troubled City.

"We fought back, I think we are the only team in the world capable of fighting back against Manchester City," the United boss said after the match.

But it was yet another defeat for them in the oldest cup tournament of football, which has earned them the title 'Bridesmaids'.

"Manchester United have lost more FA Cup finals than any other side in the history of the competition (9). The Red Devils have now lost four of their last five final appearances in the competition. Bridesmaids," stat entity Opta tweeted after their loss.

The Red Devils have won 12 FA Cup titles, but have lost 9 finals as well, the most by any team. Arsenal, the most successful club in FA Cup history have won it 14 times, with 7 defeats in the Final. Both Arsenal and Man United have played the most number of FA Cup finals with 21 each.

United's previous FA Cup win came in the 2015-16 season, when they won 2-1 against Crystal Palace. This is their solitary victory in last five FA Cup Finals, with defeats against Arsenal (2004-05), Chelsea (2006-07), Chelsea (2017-18) and now Manchester City (2022-23) in the other four occasions.
