Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will extend Harry Maguire's contract by one year, securing his stay until the summer of 2026. Maguire was initially set to be out of contract at the end of this season, allowing him to negotiate with foreign clubs. Napoli and Fenerbahce were reportedly interested in the centre-back.
Maguire has started in five of United's last six league matches, although the team has only secured one victory in those games. Despite this, Amorim considers the 31-year-old crucial for the team's immediate future. "We are happy to continue with Harry," said Amorim. "We will trigger our option. He needs to improve as a leader because we are starving for leaders on the pitch."

Maguire joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a record fee but has faced challenges, including losing the captaincy under Erik ten Hag. Amorim praised Maguire for handling these difficulties well. "It is the same as Joshua [Zirkzee], there are moments in the career of a player that are different and I think he coped very well with his struggles and when you look at our team," Amorim stated.
"He is a leader, he has to improve that part and he has to improve our game," added Amorim, highlighting Maguire's potential to enhance his leadership skills further.
Amorim also hinted at potential squad reinforcements during the January transfer window. "I will keep that to myself. We will try to do something," he mentioned, indicating plans to strengthen United's lineup.
As Manchester United looks ahead, retaining Maguire is seen as a strategic move. His experience and potential growth as a leader could play a vital role in shaping the team's future success.
