Roy Keane, a former Manchester United captain, believes the team has not improved under Ruben Amorim. He doubts they will compete for a top-six spot in the Premier League next season. After a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Manchester City, United sits 13th with 38 points. They are closer to Wolves in 17th place than to Bournemouth in 10th.
Since Ruben Amorim's appointment in November, Manchester United has struggled offensively. They have failed to score in eight league matches, with only Leicester City having a worse record during this period. In their recent match against Manchester City, United managed just two shots on target from 13 attempts, resulting in an expected goals (xG) value of only 0.91.

Keane acknowledges that Amorim is committed to his preferred 3-4-3 formation but remains sceptical about its effectiveness. "I'd like to be proven wrong and United are in the top five or six next season and I would take it all back, but I don't see it," Keane told Sky Sports after the City game. He noted that despite watching several live games recently, he hasn't seen signs of improvement.
Keane also expressed frustration with United's style of play, recalling how his teams adapted their strategies to achieve results. He believes that if the current approach was yielding goals and victories, it would be acceptable. However, he remains unconvinced by what he's witnessed so far.
Despite the team's struggles, Keane insists there is enough talent within the squad to perform better. He mentioned victories over Leicester and Real Sociedad as examples but criticised recent performances against teams like Brentford and Crystal Palace. "Are you telling me Manchester United should be behind them?" he questioned.
Gary Neville, another former player, shares Keane's concerns but emphasises the need for new signings. He believes at least five new players are necessary for significant progress. Neville highlighted Rasmus Hojlund's poor form and suggested replacing him along with Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho.
Neville understands Amorim's cautious tactics given the current squad limitations. "I do understand why Ruben Amorim's done that today, with the players he's got because he hasn't got the players to adapt," Neville said regarding United’s approach. He stressed that acquiring five quality players is crucial for implementing Amorim's desired playing style effectively.
Since Amorim took charge with a 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town in November, United has accumulated just 23 points from 20 league games. Only Southampton, Leicester, Ipswich, and Tottenham have fared worse during this period. Their goal tally of 25 is also among the lowest in the league.
The challenges facing Manchester United under Ruben Amorim are evident as they struggle both offensively and defensively. While Keane remains sceptical about immediate improvements, Neville highlights the necessity of strengthening the squad through strategic signings to support Amorim’s vision for success.
