Bengaluru, February 6: Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
Spanish newspaper AS claims Jose Mourinho is monitoring the 23-year-old Croatia international, who is yet to establish himself as a first-team regular despite being in his third season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Croat is behind Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the pecking order and it will be unfair to blame him for not getting too many starts.
The former Inter star has made just seven La Liga appearances this term and fancies trying his luck elsewhere.
Tottenham are also said to be keen on snapping up the young dynamic midfielder while Liverpool are also long-term admirers of him.
Kovacic's former club Inter are cash-rich right now and they are also interested in bringing their former star back while Juventus are also interested.
However, the report adds that Real do not want to sell Kovacic this summer.
Zinedine Zidane has given him starts in important games against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
And if Real chiefs decide to usher in a fresh era with a new manager, Kovacic could finally become central to their plans.
Luka Modric is ageing and Kovacic is well capable of taking the throne of his compatriot in coming years.
The Red Devils have shown they have the financial capabilities to land whoever they please in recent transfer windows.
But if Real resist their advances, the Red Devils could instead turn to other reported targets such as Lazio’s Sergi Milinkovic-Savic and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred.
