Manchester United Women Secure Quarter-Final Berth After 2-0 Win Over Atletico Madrid

Manchester United Women advance to the UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals by defeating Atletico Madrid 2-0 at home, securing a 5-0 aggregate victory. Julia Zigiotti Olme and Jessica Park scored, while Wolfsburg beat Juventus to set up an all-new last-eight clash. United become the second English side to reach the quarters in their debut season.

Manchester United and Wolfsburg both booked places in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals with controlled 2-0 away-leg victories, completing 5-0 and 4-2 aggregate wins respectively. United will meet Bayern Munich in the last eight, while Wolfsburg set up a tie with Lyon after overturning Juventus across two legs.

United are enjoying a strong debut season in the competition, reaching the quarter-finals at the first attempt. Marc Skinner's team have recorded five clean sheets so far, highlighting defensive discipline across qualifying and knockout rounds, and matching the standards of previous English entrants in Europe.

Man United Women into CL QF

At Leigh Sports Village, United started with a three-goal cushion from the first leg in Spain, which meant Atletico Madrid needed an early breakthrough. Instead, United added to the advantage before half-time, controlling possession for long spells and limiting Atletico Madrid to isolated chances as the night progressed.

The opening goal arrived on 28 minutes, when Lisa Naalsund threaded a precise pass into Julia Zigiotti Olme. Zigiotti Olme guided a first-time finish beyond goalkeeper Lola Gallardo, who got caught flat-footed. The strike effectively ended the contest, leaving Atletico Madrid requiring four goals without reply to force extra time.

United extended the lead shortly before the interval. Jessica Park collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and shifted into space. Park then drove a powerful shot into the top-right corner beyond Gallardo's reach on 41 minutes, completing the 5-0 aggregate scoreline with composure and accuracy.

After the restart, United continued to push for further goals rather than protect the margin. Gallardo produced an excellent save to deny Ellen Wangerheim from close range, while Park struck the base of the post. Atletico Madrid's evening worsened late on when Xenia Perez received a second yellow card for hauling back Wangerheim.

In the other Thursday fixture, Wolfsburg completed their comeback against Juventus with a 2-0 win in Italy. The Bundesliga side had trailed by two goals in the earlier home leg, but recovered to level that match, then finished the job away to progress 4-2 on aggregate.

Wolfsburg moved ahead overall after 18 minutes in Turin. A flowing team move ended with Vivien Endemann finding space in the box and finishing calmly. Juventus responded with pressure and almost forced a route back when Ana Capeta's overhead kick hit the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten.

Juventus pushed players forward during the closing stages, leaving space at the back on the counter. Wolfsburg finally settled the tie in stoppage time, when Cora Zicai's shot from inside the area crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, confirming a quarter-final meeting with Lyon.

Data Debrief on Women's Champions League quarter-finals

United's progress carries historic weight for English clubs in the Women's Champions League. Manchester United are only the second English side to reach the quarter-finals in their debut campaign under the current format, following Manchester City's achievement in 2016-17 after the competition changed structure in 2009-10.

Team Season Debut status Clean sheets Stage reached
Manchester United 2025-26 Debut season 5 Quarter-finals
Manchester City 2016-17 Debut season 6 Quarter-finals

Defensively, United's record also compares well with previous newcomers. The team's five clean sheets are bettered only by Manchester City, who kept six shutouts during the 2016-17 campaign. With Bayern Munich and Lyon awaiting United and Wolfsburg, both clubs now face higher-level tests in the quarter-finals.
