Manolo Marquez's Conflict of Interest Debate is Unavoidable with Dual Coaching Role of India, FC Goa

By MyKhel Staff

Manolo Marquez's appointment as the head coach of the Indian national football team was met with a wave of optimism, given his successful tenure with Hyderabad FC and FC Goa.

However, the decision to allow Marquez to continue his role at FC Goa, where he has another year left on his contract, has sparked concerns about a potential conflict of interest.

Manolo Marquez conflict of interest

Manolo Marquez expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I want to do my best to bring success to the millions of fans we have. I am very grateful to FC Goa for allowing us the flexibility to help the national team during the coming season while I am still the club's head coach. I'm grateful to the AIFF for this opportunity and we hope to do great things for football."

Despite assurances from key stakeholders, including the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and FC Goa, the dual role has raised eyebrows. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey assured, "The AIFF, FC Goa, and Mr. Marquez will collaborate closely to ensure there is minimal impact between the two jobs and strive to achieve the best possible results for all involved."

AIFF Acting Secretary General M. Satyanarayan told Sportstar, "I don't see any issue of conflict of interest. Bias is a perception. The coach is not going to pick poor players just because he comes from one club. He is a professional at the end of the day."

The notion of a conflict of interest is not new in football. Notable examples include Alex Ferguson's dual role with Scotland and Aberdeen, Guus Hiddink's stints with PSV Eindhoven-Australia and Chelsea-Russia, and Rinus Michels' tenure with Barcelona and the Netherlands.

For Marquez, the real challenge lies in balancing the demands of both roles, particularly with the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers scheduled for March, coinciding with the crucial stages of the ISL season.

FC Goa CEO Ravi Puskur expressed confidence in Manolo Marquez's ability to manage both roles effectively. "The first message I received from him when it was confirmed was 'Ravi, do not be concerned. We will not let go of one or the other. We will give absolutely everything.' He thrives on challenges and is committed to ensuring the best outcomes for both teams," Ravi told Sportstar.

As the domestic football season begins and Marquez's first national team assignment approaches, all eyes will be on how the Spaniard navigates this unique dual role, striving to achieve excellence for both FC Goa and the Indian national team.
