Manuel Neuer's Return Strengthens Germany Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

Germany enter the 2026 World Cup with high expectations and intense focus as Julian Nagelsmann’s side prepare to face Curacao in their Group E opener on Sunday, with Manuel Neuer confirmed as starting goalkeeper after a late return to international duty.

Neuer had stepped away from the national team two years earlier, yet Nagelsmann recalled the Bayern Munich goalkeeper for this tournament, where Neuer has now moved ahead of Oliver Baumann in the pecking order despite Baumann’s strong displays during Germany’s qualifying campaign.

Manuel Neuer strengthens Germany for 2026 WC

The 38-year-old is set to reach another personal milestone in North America, as Neuer is poised to become only the second German to feature at five World Cups, matching Lothar Matthaus, while also joining Mexico’s Antonio Carbajal as the second goalkeeper to play at five tournaments.

Neuer’s World Cup record remains significant for Germany. The goalkeeper was central to the 2014 triumph in Brazil, keeping four clean sheets and making 23 saves, the second-highest total that year, which earned the Golden Glove award and strengthened Neuer’s reputation among elite international goalkeepers.

Deniz Undav believes Neuer’s impact since rejoining the squad is already clear. The Germany forward said: "Manu is always on the go. Manu talks a lot, even off the pitch. He commands respect. When hes in goal, you can see it even in trainingas a striker, you have to be a bit more precise with your shots. Hes one of the best goalkeepers of all time, but also a very calm man. When you talk to him, you can feel his experience and his understanding of football."

Undav’s remarks underline Neuer’s influence beyond match days, with coaches and players relying on the goalkeeper’s experience in preparation for Curacao. That fixture will be the first meeting between the nations, adding an element of uncertainty for Germany despite the difference in tournament history.

Germany’s record on the global stage remains extensive. This is the country’s 21st World Cup finals appearance, the most of any European side and behind only Brazil, who lead the list with 23. Against teams from the Americas at World Cups, Germany have won 14 of their last 17 matches, drawing once and losing twice.

Within the camp, Undav reports a sharp mood. The forward added: "Everyone is really excited for the first match. The focus is definitely there, everyone is giving it their all in training. It would be very important to start the tournament successfully. Of course, we want to win. Becoming world champion is the goal. If I were to say now that we only want to reach the round of 16, then Im in the wrong place. Every one of these guys has a goaland that is to become world champion."

Germany now look to match their historical standards, backed by Neuer’s experience and Undav’s ambition, as Nagelsmann’s squad target a strong start against Curacao and aim to convert long-term consistency at World Cups into another title challenge in 2026.
