Marc Cucurella Joins Real Madrid After Decisive Chelsea Bid

Marc Cucurella says the chance to join Real Madrid was too strong to turn down, as the left-back completed a 60m (51.8m) transfer from Chelsea and prepared to work under returning head coach Jose Mourinho at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Mourinho is back in the Madrid dugout after the previous spell between 2010 and 2013, when Madrid collected three trophies including a LaLiga title. Real Madrid have gone two full seasons without major silverware, increasing pressure on the new coaching team and recent signings.

Cucurella joins Real Madrid

The 27-year-old finalised the move from Chelsea on Monday and became the first of three major additions announced by Los Blancos this week. Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate were confirmed afterwards, as Real Madrid reshaped the squad ahead of the new campaign.

Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 and played 163 matches for the Blues. The defender supplied 11 assists and scored nine goals, helping Chelsea win the Club World Cup and the Conference League. Many observers expected a return to Barcelona, where Cucurella came through the academy, before Real Madrid stepped in.

Cucurella explained the decision to El Mundo, stressing how clear the choice felt once Madrid called. "There were different options, but when the offer from Real Madrid came along, I didn't hesitate, Cucurella told El Mundo. I think it's a unique opportunity. Ultimately, playing for Real Madrid is an honour, and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts."

The Spain international said talks with Mourinho helped confirm the transfer. "Yes, we were talking and he told me he was really looking forward to working with me, that I would adapt very well, that Real Madrid was a great club, added Cucurella. Then, nothing more, just that I should do very well in the World Cup and that we would see each other in Madrid. He told me he wanted me, and that's it. I'm very happy about this confidence. I'm looking forward to starting to work with him."

Cucurella now arrives in Madrid as a high-profile option at left-back, with Real Madrid seeking fresh direction after two seasons without trophies. The transfer fee, recent honours with Chelsea, and trust from Mourinho underline the expectation that Cucurella will play a central role in the club’s new cycle.
