Argentina have drafted Tottenham defender Marcos Senesi into the World Cup squad. The move follows Leonardo Balerdi suffering injury in training. The defending champions confirmed the late switch on Thursday, shortly before the tournament's opening match. Argentina start Group J against Algeria on Tuesday, then meet Austria and Jordan.

Senesi had only joined Spurs on a free transfer from Bournemouth on Wednesday. The 29-year-old defender made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, joint-most among Bournemouth outfield players. Senesi also completed 1,839 passes, more than any other Cherries footballer.
