Enzo Maresca Expresses Regret Over Ben Chilwell's Exclusion From Chelsea Team Plans
Enzo Maresca expressed regret over excluding Ben Chilwell from Chelsea's squad, yet confirmed the left-back is not in his plans. Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in August 2020, has played 107 matches for the club and was part of their 2021 Champions League victory. Despite this, since Maresca's arrival in West London, Chilwell has only played once, a brief appearance in Chelsea's 5-0 EFL Cup win against Barrow.
Maresca acknowledged that players naturally want more game time and might consider leaving. "But Ben has been top. I have to say that; he has been top. Very professional, works hard. I feel shame because of that situation, but in terms of behaviour, he has been very good," Maresca stated. He made it clear early on that Chilwell was unlikely to feature if he remained at Chelsea this season.

When questioned about Chilwell's absence from the team, Maresca explained it was his decision. He highlighted the versatility of players like Malo Gusto, Reece James, and Marc Cucurella as reasons for his choice. Although he praised Chilwell as a top full-back with past achievements and national team appearances, Maresca struggled to see him adapting to different roles required during matches.
Chilwell is among several Chelsea players linked with potential transfers due to limited playing time. Others facing similar situations include Renato Veiga, Alex Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei. Christopher Nkunku is also reportedly unhappy with his lack of involvement under Maresca's management.
Maresca admitted it's challenging to satisfy everyone within a large squad. "It's impossible, two months not playing, and they won't be happy," he said. The primary goal remains achieving success for the club and winning matches. While keeping players content is ideal, it's not always feasible if they aren't playing regularly.
Maresca emphasised that selling all unhappy players would leave them with just 12 squad members. The intention is not to offload players but rather manage expectations while prioritising team success.
