Enzo Maresca asserted that Chelsea matched Manchester City's performance despite their 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Italian's first game as Chelsea manager saw goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic secure victory for the Premier League champions in their 2024-25 opener.
Chelsea generated 1.23 expected goals (xG) compared to City's 0.82, nearly equalising when Nicolas Jackson's goal was disallowed for offside just before half-time. Jackson was thwarted again by Ederson after the break, and Enzo Fernandez's cross was intercepted by Rico Lewis, preventing Pedro Neto from scoring on his debut.

Maresca, who previously managed Leicester City, felt his team performed on par with City but acknowledged that Pep Guardiola's side excelled in critical moments. "I think we competed very well for much of the game," Maresca told Sky Sports. "We were similar if not better. The performance was there but we didn't take the chances."
Maresca emphasised the importance of creating opportunities, even though Chelsea failed to convert them into goals. "For me, the important thing is to create chances," he said. "We didn't score but we created chances." He noted that City's first goal was nearly offside and highlighted how such moments can alter match outcomes.
The Italian coach praised his team's efforts to maintain possession against the reigning champions. "It was quite clear, you can see a team trying to keep the ball and dominate," he stated. "We were against the champions. We will continue and win games."
Maresca's debut match was overshadowed by his decision to exclude Raheem Sterling from the squad, leading Sterling's representatives to seek clarity about his future. Sterling had played in the opening matchday of the last 11 Premier League seasons for Liverpool, City, and Chelsea but was left out along with Ben Chilwell, Romelu Lukaku, and Conor Gallagher.
Maresca explained that these exclusions were purely tactical decisions made before the game. "To be honest, I didn't see the statement," Maresca said regarding Sterling's representatives' comments. "I have nothing to say. It was a tactical decision, no more than that."
Despite the defeat, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea's future performances. He believes that continuing to create chances will eventually lead to victories. "The performance was there and that is the main thing," he reiterated.
The Blues' next challenge will test their ability to build on this performance and secure wins in upcoming matches.
