Marseille Triumphs Over Newcastle United 2-1 As Aubameyang Scores Twice To End Winning Streak

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's two goals in the second half secured a 2-1 victory for Marseille against Newcastle United, halting the visitors' Champions League winning streak.

Marseille staged a comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Champions League, ending Eddie Howe's team's winning streak. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in quick succession after Newcastle led at halftime through Harvey Barnes' goal. This result left Newcastle eighth in the table with nine points, while Marseille moved three points behind them.

Newcastle started strongly, with Malick Thiaw's header cleared off the line before Barnes scored six minutes into the match. Despite creating several chances, Marseille couldn't capitalise until Aubameyang's decisive intervention early in the second half. His first goal came just 20 seconds after the restart, as he bypassed Nick Pope and scored from a tight angle.

Aubameyang Leads Marseille Past Newcastle United

Aubameyang's second goal arrived five minutes later when he converted Timothy Weah's low cross into the net. This quick turnaround stunned Newcastle, who struggled to respond effectively despite maintaining some threat on counter-attacks. The loss marked Newcastle's third consecutive away defeat after scoring first.

The match statistics highlighted both teams' efforts, with Marseille generating 1.69 expected goals (xG) from 18 shots compared to Newcastle's 1.46 xG from 20 attempts. Although Newcastle had previously never lost an away Champions League game after leading at halftime, familiar issues resurfaced during this match.

This was the sixth occasion that Newcastle led at halftime in an away Champions League fixture and their first loss under such circumstances. Their recent struggles have seen them lose three straight away games despite taking early leads in each one. Aubameyang's performance was no surprise to many fans; he has now scored eight goals and provided three assists against Newcastle across all competitions.

Marseille's victory was crucial as it kept them within reach of advancing further in the competition. Meanwhile, Newcastle will need to address their recurring issues if they hope to improve their standing and secure progression from their group.
