Marseille host Lyon at the Orange Velodrome with the Opta supercomputer leaning towards a home win, even though Marseille have not taken three points in four Ligue 1 games. A Champions League place remains within reach for both clubs, adding extra weight to a meeting between traditional rivals.
The recent head-to-head record in Marseille strongly favours the hosts. Marseille have won the last three Ligue 1 home clashes against Lyon, matching their total from the previous 14 such fixtures. Another success would give Marseille four straight home victories over Lyon for only the third time in club history.

Beye’s side sit fourth in Ligue 1, five points behind third-place Lyon, while Lille and Rennes remain close behind. Despite a four-match winless run, Opta numbers still lean towards Marseille. Lyon have not suffered successive away defeats this season, which adds further intrigue to the prediction models.

Across the history of this league fixture, Lyon have 38 wins and Marseille have 32, along with 40 draws. Only Marseille’s meetings with Bordeaux have produced more stalemates in Ligue 1. However, these clubs have not shared the points in the competition since the 2020-21 season.
Habib Beye only took over from Roberto De Zerbi in February and lost the first match 2-0 away to Brest, but Beye is clear about the mindset he wants. "I’m very optimistic. We want to win this match to get back within two points of Lyon," Beye said.
Beye, who played for Marseille between 2003 and 2007, emphasised approach and emotion rather than anxiety. "There are 11 matches left, 33 points; the season is very long. Any other result wouldn’t change everything. This team knows what it can do. It’s an exceptional match to play at the Velodrome. It’s a real challenge for them too. There’s no fear. There’s joy. We have to show a winning attitude from the very first second."
Lyon’s preparation has been complicated by injuries as the schedule tightens. A seven-game winning streak in Ligue 1 had lifted Lyon into a strong position, yet a 3-1 defeat to Strasbourg in the previous outing checked that momentum and exposed concerns about depth.
Top scorer Pavel Sulc is expected to miss this match, along with Afonso Moreira, leaving Paulo Fonseca short of important options at both ends of the pitch. Fonseca addressed the situation directly. "It’s tough because these are four players who are difficult to replace," Fonseca said. "We have to play with the players we have. We face many matches in similar situations, and we have to build the team with those who are available. [The defensive injuries are] concerning because we have few options. We look at what we can do with the players we have. These are players who carry the team on the field, who are present in the box, strong in defence, and capable in attack. This depth was lacking in the last match. It’s difficult, but we can find a solution."
Amine Gouiri has developed a strong personal record against Lyon in Ligue 1. Gouiri has been involved in five goals in the last five league matches against this opponent, scoring three and assisting two. Only against Angers and Metz has Gouiri been involved in more goals in the top flight.
With Sulc likely sidelined after scoring the winner in the reverse fixture on 31 August, Lyon may look to Corentin Tolisso for attacking impact. Tolisso is the only other current Lyon player to have scored against Marseille in Ligue 1 and also netted in the 3-2 defeat at the Velodrome in February 2025.
Marseille’s chance to claim a fourth consecutive home victory over Lyon, the pressure from Lille and Rennes, and the injury issues facing Fonseca’s squad mean this meeting carries substantial weight in the race for European places. Beye’s optimism, Opta’s model and the recent home record combine to place expectation on Marseille, while Lyon must respond after the Strasbourg loss.
