Mary Earps Addresses Backlash Over England Retirement Decision Before Euros
Mary Earps recently opened up about the backlash she faced after deciding to retire from international football. Earps, who has 53 caps for England, played a crucial role in their Euro 2022 victory and their journey to the World Cup final the following year. Despite her achievements, she lost her starting position to Chelsea's Hannah Hampton.
The decision to step down came just over a month before England's Euros defence. Reports suggested that Sarina Wiegman had informed Earps she wouldn't be the first-choice goalkeeper for the tournament. Although Wiegman asked her to reconsider, Earps remained firm in her choice, believing it was right.

Earps expressed on the Happy Place podcast that she felt "villainised" by the reaction to her retirement. She said, "I think that I was villainised in a way that probably was a bit hard to see things and read things." Her friends and family were affected by this reaction, which upset her more than anything else.
Despite feeling relief after making her decision, Earps acknowledged the emotional toll it took on her. She shared that it had been mentally and physically exhausting. "I was just like, right, I've given everything here," she stated. The decision wasn't sudden; it had been considered for some time.
Her teammates, including Lucy Bronze, were not surprised by her choice. Earps explained that while it might have shocked some people, those close to her understood as they had been part of private discussions. "In total transparency, it's a very hard decision to make," she added.
Looking Forward
Earps remains supportive of her former teammates and looks forward to cheering them on this summer. She cherishes the memories shared with them and values their support during this transition. "These are girls that I grew up with and have spent so much time with," she reflected.
The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper emphasised that although stepping away was difficult, it was necessary for her well-being. She continues to believe it was the right move despite any external perceptions or reactions.
This chapter marks a new beginning for Earps as she steps back from international duties while continuing her club career with Paris Saint-Germain. Her focus now shifts towards personal growth and supporting England from afar as they compete in upcoming tournaments.
