Matteo Ruggeri Joins Atletico Madrid From Atalanta In €20m Transfer Deal

Atletico Madrid has secured Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta for €20m. The left-back signed a five-year contract, aiming to bolster Diego Simeone's squad ahead of the new season.

Atletico Madrid have secured Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta, signing him for five years. The transfer fee is reportedly 20 million euros. This acquisition aims to bolster Diego Simeone's defensive options on the left flank. Previously, Atletico considered Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Aston Villa's Lucas Digne but opted for the 22-year-old Italian.

Ruggeri played 38 matches for Atalanta last season, often in a more advanced midfield role under Gian Piero Gasperini. He excelled in crossing, with only Davide Zappacosta surpassing his 25 successful crosses in Serie A. Ruggeri also created 25 chances, ranking fifth in his team.

Ruggeri Transfers to Atletico Madrid from Atalanta

Defensively, Ruggeri proved reliable by winning 24 tackles in Italy's top league. Only Ederson and Marten de Roon had more tackles for Atalanta. His defensive skills complement his offensive contributions, making him a versatile addition to Atletico's squad.

The club has also reportedly reached an agreement with Real Betis for Johnny Cardoso and is negotiating with Villarreal for midfielder Alex Baena. These moves are part of Simeone's strategy to refresh the team after departures of players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, and Reinildo Mandava before the 2025-26 season.

This signing marks the first time since Alessio Cerci in 2014 that an Italian player has joined Atletico Madrid. Cerci made just 11 appearances before departing five months later. Ruggeri's arrival signifies a new chapter as Atletico looks to strengthen its squad with fresh talent.

Simeone is focused on rejuvenating his team with strategic signings like Ruggeri while managing key player exits. This approach aims to maintain competitiveness in LaLiga and beyond as Atletico prepares for the upcoming season.
