Mbappe Becomes France All-time Top Scorer At World Cup After Win Over Senegal

Kylian Mbappe became France's all-time leading scorer as France beat Senegal 3-1 at New York New Jersey Stadium, moving Didier Deschamps' side to the top of Group I. Mbappe struck twice, reaching 57 and then 58 international goals, while Bradley Barcola added another to secure the World Cup group victory.

The double not only moved Mbappe past Olivier Giroud on France's overall scoring list, it also put Mbappe clear as the country's most prolific player at World Cups, moving beyond Just Fontaine's 13 strikes. Mbappe now sat on 14 World Cup goals, leaving the forward only two behind Miroslav Klose's tournament record of 16.

Senegal actually carried more threat before the break. In the 25th minute, Nicolas Jackson smashed a shot against the base of the left post, and the rebound hit Mike Maignan's foot before trickling wide. Later, Sadio Mane cut the ball back for an unmarked Ismaila Sarr, who fired over from close range.

France struggled badly in that first period, with the front three barely involved. Between them, they managed only one touch in Senegal's penalty area before half-time, and that came from Mbappe. France had another escape as statistics showed the woodwork had already come to their aid five times at World Cups since 2022 and six times since 2018, both competition highs.

The match flipped after the interval, as France returned with more intent. Around the hour mark, Mbappe went down under a challenge from Mane and believed a penalty had been awarded. However, after referee Alireza Faghani reviewed the incident on the monitor, the decision changed to a goal-kick, leaving Les Bleus clearly puzzled.

Mbappe responded quickly to that setback. Six minutes after the overturned decision, Michael Olise threaded a low pass through Senegal's back line. Mbappe accelerated onto it and, turning sharply, drilled a low finish beyond Edouard Mendy's right arm to register Mbappe's 13th World Cup goal and give France the lead.

Senegal briefly thought Jackson had dragged them level almost at once. Two minutes after Mbappe's opener, Jackson lashed a powerful effort into the roof of the net, but the assistant's flag ruled that Jackson had moved too early. The offside decision stood, and Senegal's celebrations ended quickly.

France then showed the depth of Deschamps' squad. Substitute Bradley Barcola, making a World Cup debut, needed only 131 seconds on the pitch to score. In the 82nd minute, Adrien Rabiot split Senegal's defence with a precise through ball, and Barcola lifted a delicate dink over Mendy to extend France's advantage to 2-0.

Senegal still found a way back into the game late on. Ibrahim Mbaye struck from a tight angle to reduce the deficit, and that goal carried historic weight. At 18 years and 143 days, Mbaye became the youngest African scorer at a World Cup. Soon after, Aurelien Tchouameni's deflection almost beat Maignan, who clawed the looping ball away from the goal-line.

The final word still belonged to Mbappe. Just 68 seconds after Mbaye's goal, Mbappe collected the ball in space and unleashed a powerful long-range drive that flew beyond Mendy. That strike not only restored France's two-goal lead, it also pushed Mbappe to 58 goals for France, confirming Mbappe as the country's outright top scorer.

The key individual milestones from France's 3-1 win over Senegal can be set out clearly.

Player Record Figure
Kylian Mbappe France all-time top scorer 58 goals
Kylian Mbappe France World Cup goals 14 goals
Ibrahim Mbaye Youngest African World Cup scorer 18 years 143 days

France ended the night with three points, first place in Group I and another landmark for Mbappe. Deschamps also saw evidence of strong options from the bench through Barcola, while Senegal gained encouragement from Mbaye's emergence and their periods of pressure, especially before the interval.
