Kylian Mbappe Reflects On Overthinking As An Obstacle During His Madrid Adaptation Journey

Kylian Mbappe shares insights on his initial struggles at Real Madrid, attributing them to overthinking. Now in top form, he aims to enhance his performance for the Champions League holders.

Kylian Mbappe has acknowledged that adjusting to life at Real Madrid took longer than he anticipated. However, he is now pleased to have found his stride with the Champions League champions. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has netted four goals in his last three matches, including two in a 4-1 victory over Las Palmas in LaLiga.

Reflecting on his journey, Mbappe admitted that he initially overthought his gameplay after joining Madrid. He scored 27 goals in 29 league games during his final season with PSG and has now scored 12 in 18 for Madrid. A significant moment came during a 2-1 defeat to Athletic Bilbao in December when he missed a penalty for the second time that week.

Mbappe Discusses Challenges of Madrid Adaptation

"I believe it was a mentality issue," Mbappe stated before the Champions League match against Salzburg. "I realised I had to work harder." He explained that overthinking affected his focus on the field, pondering whether to move into spaces or areas occupied by teammates like Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

Despite feeling physically fit and integrated with the team, Mbappe knew he needed to elevate his performance. "I didn't come to Madrid to play badly," he said. "Here we have to play well all the time, and now I am ready to do that." This realisation marked a turning point for him.

Since the Bilbao game, Mbappe has regained form, scoring 17 goals across all competitions this season. He acknowledged the expectations placed on him but stressed the importance of staying calm and focused on improving his game. "I'm never going to be a shy player," he remarked.

Mbappe emphasised arriving at Madrid with humility and respect, understanding that demands cannot be made immediately upon joining such a prestigious club. His goal is to consistently perform at his best for Madrid, driven by pressure and the desire to excel further.

Champions League Standings

Madrid currently sits 20th in the 36-team Champions League table with nine points, trailing four points behind the top eight spots needed for direct qualification to the last 16. Their upcoming opponents, Salzburg, are positioned at 32nd with three points, five points away from playoff contention.

Mbappe's journey highlights how mental adjustments can significantly impact performance levels. His determination and focus have allowed him to overcome initial challenges and contribute effectively to Real Madrid's success this season.
