Memphis Depay And Frenkie De Jong Confirmed To Start For Netherlands In Nations League Quarter-Final Against Spain

Ronald Koeman has announced that Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong will start for the Netherlands in their Nations League quarter-final against Spain. Both players have overcome recent fitness issues, with Depay aiming to become the all-time top scorer for his country.

Ronald Koeman has announced that Memphis Depay will lead the Netherlands' attack in their Nations League quarter-final first leg against Spain on Thursday. Depay, who last played for the national team during the European Championships last summer, has been in impressive form with Corinthians. He scored nine goals and provided 11 assists in 29 matches across all competitions, earning him a recall to the national squad.

Koeman travelled to Brazil to observe Depay's performance before finalising his squad selection. He expressed confidence in Depay's current form, stating, "The way I saw Memphis in Brazil and the way I see him now, how he has come in and how fresh he looks in training, it does give me confidence for tomorrow." Koeman also noted that Depay is fitter now than before the European Championship.

Depay and De Jong Start for Netherlands

The former Manchester United player is on the brink of making history with the Netherlands. He is just five goals shy of surpassing Robin Van Persie's record of 50 goals to become the country's all-time top scorer. Additionally, if Depay plays both legs against Spain, he will join an elite group as the ninth Dutch player to reach 100 international appearances.

Justin Kluivert is also expected to feature prominently after returning to international duty last November following a six-year hiatus. The Bournemouth forward has been outstanding this season, contributing 13 goals and seven assists in 32 games across all competitions. Koeman praised Kluivert's development, saying, "I have always believed in his qualities, but he has made many wandering choices in his career."

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong is set to start against Spain after recovering from a stomach issue that kept him out of his club's recent victory over Atletico Madrid. De Jong had earlier missed part of the season due to an ankle injury but has since returned to full fitness. "We'll see tomorrow, but as far as I'm concerned, I can play 90 minutes," De Jong stated confidently at a press conference.

The midfielder has made 29 appearances for Barcelona this season despite early setbacks. His return is crucial for the Netherlands as they aim for success in the Nations League. De Jong reassured fans about his condition by saying, "I'm completely fit again, and I don't have any problems with my ankle any more."

This upcoming match against Spain presents an opportunity for several players to showcase their skills on an international stage. With key players like Depay and De Jong back in form and Kluivert eager to make an impact, Koeman's squad looks poised for a competitive encounter.
