Romelu Lukaku expressed concerns about Belgium's mindset following their 3-1 loss to Ukraine in the Nations League play-off first leg. Lukaku initially put Belgium ahead, heading in Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick for his 86th international goal. However, Ukraine responded strongly after halftime, with Thibaut Courtois unable to prevent their comeback.
Ukraine's Oleksandr Zinchenko nearly equalised with a free-kick that hit the post while the score was still 1-0. Oleksii Hutsuliak then levelled the match from close range in the 66th minute. Shortly after, Vladyslav Vanat and Illia Zabarnyi scored within five minutes to secure a significant advantage for Ukraine heading into the second leg in Genk.

Lukaku highlighted Belgium's inability to apply pressure, especially in midfield. "It was about winning the duels, and we had problems putting pressure," he said. He emphasised that this issue was evident throughout the match. The team struggled to find solutions, which he described as disappointing.
In terms of duels, Belgium engaged in 72 against Ukraine, winning 54.2% overall and 61.1% of aerial contests. However, they only won 39.3% of duels in the second half and succeeded in just half of their tackles (3/6). This decline contributed significantly to their defeat.
Lukaku believes Belgium needs to rebuild from scratch due to technical deficiencies. "Technically, there is a lot of work to be done," he stated. He stressed that losing like this is unacceptable for a new generation of players who must learn from older teammates.
The forward compared the current squad's mentality unfavourably with previous generations. He insisted on cultivating a strong team mentality to avoid conceding goals and emphasised that winning duels is crucial for success.
Lukaku also pointed out that Belgium must play total football to win matches effectively. He noted that agreements need to be made within the team because everything seemed unclear during the game against Ukraine.
"In the first half, we found a solution and then it became sloppy," Lukaku explained. He mentioned that fear on the ball hindered their performance and made it difficult for everyone involved.
The match marked Rudi Garcia's debut as Belgium's coach, ending in disappointment as his side failed to maintain their lead against Ukraine's determined comeback.
