Messi 2030 World Cup Participation Hints For Argentina

Lionel Messi is not preparing to step away from Argentina duty after the current World Cup. Messi has made clear that the focus stays on international football for now. The decision keeps Argentina’s captain at the centre of plans, as the squad continues its title defence in North America.

Messi, who turned 39 on Wednesday, has also left the door open for a longer run. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has suggested that involvement could even extend to the 2030 World Cup. That tournament will include at least one match in Argentina as part of FIFA's centenary schedule.

Messi hints at 2030 World Cup

Asked directly about playing at the 2030 World Cup, Messi gave a cautious response. "I don't know. The truth is, I'm not thinking about that right now, he told reporters when asked if he could compete at the next World Cup, in which Argentina will host a match as part of FIFA's centenary celebrations. It seems a bit far off but, as I said, I'm living one day at a time and focused on the present. I will continue for some time, as long as I can contribute, feel good physically, and help my team-mates.I will keep playing." Those words underline that Messi plans to stay available while fitness and form allow.

On the pitch in North America, Messi has been central to Argentina’s strong start. Messi leads the Golden Boot standings with five goals from two appearances. Overall, Messi now holds the World Cup scoring record with 18 goals. Across the previous two tournaments, Messi scored 12 of those goals, showing sustained impact at the highest level.

That scoring record places Messi alongside elite World Cup forwards. A notable statistic shows Messi has scored four or more goals in three different editions: 2014, 2022 and 2026.

The numbers from recent tournaments can be set out clearly.

Messi’s goals have been decisive for Argentina’s campaign so far. Argentina have won both matches and sit top of Group J. Opta's supercomputer rates Argentina as favourites for the title. The model gives the defending champions a 15.5% chance of lifting the World Cup trophy again.

For Argentina supporters, Messi’s stance offers both reassurance and realism. The captain is delivering at a high level and driving results at this World Cup. At the same time, Messi is keeping future plans open, choosing to assess condition and contribution step by step.
