Messi Breaks World Cup Scoring Record As Argentina Clinches Knockout Place

Lionel Messi moves clear as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer after Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria. Messi struck twice to reach 18 goals at the tournament, securing qualification for the round of 32 with one match remaining, despite an earlier missed penalty that denied another hat-trick and left Messi visibly exhausted but satisfied.

Argentina’s progress from Group J comes with a sense of control. Six points from two fixtures give Lionel Scaloni space to rotate for the final group game. Austria, however, still face pressure, needing a result against Algeria to be sure of reaching the knockout phase after another defeat at a major event.

Messi Breaks World Cup Scoring Record

Scaloni highlighted the response from the captain after the early setback from the spot. "It's logical that it's a blow not converting a penalty but knowing that at the moment of switching on when Leo switches on, everyone does," he said. Scaloni added that this reaction underlined the squad’s collective strength and mentality.

The coach pointed to Messi’s off-ball effort as a sign of leadership. "And I think that's a strength also of the team. Even when the team were suffering without having the ball, he was working and won a ball in the goal you could see his commitment." Scaloni felt that sequence summed up Argentina’s work rate.

Messi had already matched Miroslav Klose’s record in Argentina’s first group match with a hat-trick. The brace against Austria then moved Messi onto 18 World Cup goals, setting a new benchmark. Messi also becomes only the third player to score in six straight World Cup appearances, following Just Fontaine in 1958 and Jairzinho in 1970.

The night could have been even more productive. Messi saw a ninth-minute penalty saved, denying a second successive match ball. That spot-kick continued a mixed record from twelve yards. Messi has now taken seven and missed three penalties at World Cups, excluding shootouts, the most attempts and misses in the competition’s history.

Team / Player Key World Cup 2026 stats vs Austria
Lionel Messi 2 goals, 1 missed penalty, reached 18 tournament goals, scored in 6 successive appearances
Argentina Won 2-0, secured 6 points, qualified early for round of 32 with one group game left
Austria 56 final-third entries, 6 shots, 1 on target, remain 2nd in Group J, 10 losses in last 17 major tournament games

Across an international career, Messi has now failed with six of 31 penalties for Argentina. Despite that record, the captain remains decisive in open play. The brace against Austria not only delivered three points but also eased tension within the squad, with progression confirmed before facing Algeria in the final group fixture.

After the match, Messi focused on the collective step forward more than the personal record. "I am enjoying this moment and seeing how far we can go together," he told Telemundo. "I had the penalty, but maybe I wouldn't have scored the others [if that had gone in]." Messi stressed the importance of perspective.

Messi underlined that the result mattered more than the missed chance. "To be honest, I'm really happy about the win, especially as it's such a crucial victory, hard-fought and well-earned, but one that gives us peace of mind for what lies ahead. This is the World Cup; it was a very evenly matched, very intense match, and we're happy to have picked up six points and to have already qualified."

When asked to pick a favourite World Cup goal, Messi struggled to choose. "I don't know. To be honest, I can't remember right now. I'm tired, I'm running low on energy, and I'm finding it hard to think. Anyway, I'm just going to enjoy this moment, and I'm looking forward to celebrating with my team-mates."

Austria’s position in Group J now looks fragile despite an assertive display against Argentina. They stay second but must still finish the job against Algeria. Across the last 17 matches at major tournaments, including the World Cup and Euros, Austria have now suffered 10 defeats, with five wins and two draws.

The numbers from this match show Austria were not passive opponents. They registered 56 entries into the final third, compared with Argentina’s 40. Austria produced six attempts on goal, though only one effort required a save. Wastefulness in the final phase, and vulnerability to transition, again limited their tournament progress.

Ralf Rangnick felt the performance matched the tactical blueprint, even if the outcome disappointed. "We could have achieved more, but overall, our performance was exactly as we'd planned bold and courageous," Rangnick told Magenta TV. The head coach believed one or two moments needed even greater belief when attacking Argentina’s back line.

Rangnick reflected on missed opportunities from distance and the timing of Argentina’s second goal. "I would have liked to see a bit more courage in one or two situations, and perhaps a shot or two from distance, which would have been possible, especially in the first half. The way the 2-0 came about, with that counter-attack happening, was very frustrating. But overall, it was a good performance from us."

Argentina now approach the final group fixture with qualification assured and Lionel Messi on a historic World Cup mark. Austria leave the match encouraged by elements of their play but under pressure to convert territory into goals against Algeria. Both teams know that the next game will define how this group stage is ultimately remembered.
