Mexico Coach Aguirre Expresses Caution Despite World Cup 2026 Group A Progress

Mexico moved into the World Cup 2026 knockout rounds with a 3-0 win over Czechia in Mexico City, yet head coach Javier Aguirre stayed demanding. Mexico secured first place in Group A, but Aguirre warned that Mexico still lacked a full 90-minute display.

As co-hosts, Mexico advanced to the last 32 with three wins from three games and no goals conceded. Mexico will now meet a third-placed side from Group C, E, F, H or I in the round of 32, while Czechia exited the tournament.

Aguirre cautious after Mexico progression

Aguirre, who also guided Mexico at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, admitted mixed feelings after the win. The coach praised Mexico’s mental strength after a slow opening period but stressed that the performance level still did not match Mexico’s ambitions for World Cup 2026.

"We haven't played well in the matches we've been winning, I am not fully satisfied," he said. "When we have been playing well we lose continuity. My focus for tomorrow is to see if we are capable of maintaining 90 minutes in a nearly perfect match. I didn't like the first 20 minutes, but then we settled down, the team recovered, and that's where we showed the power of mental strength. Obviously, we always have a few things to work on, but I think we've improved in that area, that mentality of 'well, that's it, we've done our part'. This group has character,"

All three goals arrived after half-time, reflecting Mexico’s stronger second period. Mateo Chavez struck first, before Julian Quinones added the second. Alvaro Fidalgo completed the 3-0 scoreline, confirming Mexico’s place at the top of Group A at World Cup 2026.

The win against Czechia kept Mexico’s perfect group record intact at World Cup 2026. Mexico finished with three victories from three matches. Czechia collected only one point, earned against South Africa in the second game, and left the competition after the group stage.

The atmosphere around the Mexico squad remained upbeat after the result at Mxico City Stadium, boosted by strong home backing.

Czechia head coach Miroslav Koubek pointed to a heavy travel schedule as one factor behind the poor campaign. Koubek also highlighted costly errors in the Mexico match, noting that Czechia allowed clear chances and that Mexico punished almost every defensive mistake.

"I have a contract," Koubek said. "I never give up any fight. That's not what I do and I will definitely fulfil my contract. Let me congratulate Mexico on today's win. Their performance was good. Nevertheless, I think we made it easy for Mexico, easier than it should have been. We had a big chance at the beginning but in the second half we made some stupid mistakes and Mexico was able to capitalise on our errors."

Mexico now enter the round of 32 with momentum and a perfect record at World Cup 2026, yet Aguirre remains alert to flaws. Czechia depart with one point and regrets over missed chances, while Mexico prepare for a knockout tie against a yet-unknown third-placed opponent.
