Inter Miami's journey in the Club World Cup ended with a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the last 16. Despite the loss, Lionel Messi felt that Miami left a positive impression. PSG, the European champions, secured a 4-0 victory in Atlanta on Sunday. Joao Neves scored twice, while Tomas Aviles' own goal and Achraf Hakimi's strike completed the first-half scoring.
Messi faced his former club, PSG, where he played for two seasons after leaving Barcelona. He ended the match with four shots, sharing the highest number of attempts with Hakimi and Bradley Barcola. Messi tested PSG's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma twice during the game. Although Miami exited early from the tournament, Messi was satisfied with their overall performance.

Miami qualified for the Club World Cup by winning the MLS Supporters' Shield and remained unbeaten in the group stage. They finished second in Group A behind Palmeiras. Miami nearly topped their group after leading 2-0 against Palmeiras but conceded two late goals to draw. If they had won, they would have faced Botafogo instead of PSG.
Reflecting on their match against Palmeiras, Messi said, "We remain with the sentiment against Palmeiras that [instead of] winning the game 2-0, [Miami drew] and we had to face PSG, which was more complicated." He acknowledged that while it wasn't disappointing, it was a situation that could have been different.
PSG dominated the first half with ten attempts on goal while Miami struggled to create chances. The Herons improved slightly after halftime with eight shots, three of which were on target. Despite these challenges, Messi praised his team's efforts and believed they presented themselves well at this level.
"Well, the game was what was expected," Messi stated about facing PSG. "They are a huge team... We tried to do the best possible." He expressed pride in how Miami performed despite facing such formidable opponents.
Jordi Alba echoed Messi's sentiments about Miami meeting their expectations during the tournament. "Well, we've had three rivals in our group who are also very strong," Alba noted. He believed Miami outperformed all three group opponents and took pride in their efforts against PSG.
Alba acknowledged PSG as a tough opponent that tested them thoroughly but maintained that Miami should be proud of their achievements. "Things are what they are," he remarked about facing such a strong team like PSG.
The experience at the Club World Cup provided valuable lessons for Inter Miami as they look forward to future challenges. Both Messi and Alba highlighted their satisfaction with how they competed and emphasized focusing on upcoming opportunities.
